Counter Culture – The Cake Hole Project

2010 August 30

A project initiated by a friend’s wedding, inspired by dried flowers and cupcakes sparked a passion for Vicki Anderson and Ray Garcia that would launch the couple into a new adventure.

When a friend called upon them to create a display for cupcakes at her wedding, the two had no idea the project would be a game changer. Lucky for them, the bride turned over complete creative control, letting their minds run wild. The result? A hanging piece of art that doubled as a cupcake holder, which eventually led to the Cake Hole Project.

Since the wedding the couple has created a number of new designs, and each masterpiece gets a name inspired by the materials used to build it: Thistle, Candies, Nest, and Bubbles make up just a few members of the Cake Hole Project Family. Though the inspiration for the holders began with cupcakes, the sky’s the limit when it comes to what they can display. Ray and Vicki have seen everything from fruits to nuts to mini cakes and even dog treats and jewelry put in them. And one day they dream of the holders being used as a sophisticated jello shot delivery system (well, not really, but they seem to appreciate different interpretations).

What started as a project has turned into a labor of love that the duo hopes will eventually take root. They want to see the Cake Hole Project making appearances at weddings, hotels, restaurants, bakeries, galleries and parties everywhere, so they’ve turned their focus on continually creating new pieces and spreading the word.
