Counter Culture – Grits Takedown NYC

2010 July 1

What happens when you mix New Yorkers, grits and a gutted out warehouse in Brooklyn? A deliciously orchestrated Grits Takedown.

Grits may belong to the South, but these city dwellers can quite arguably hold their own. Organized by Matt Timms, producer of the original Chili Takedown and the series of Takedowns that followed, the grits event hosted 22 cooks from throughout the city.

Recipes and ingredients ran the gamut…everything from sweet potato, to miso and mushroom, banana, bone marrow butter, wild boar sausage and even bacon jam. There was the traditional – cheesy grits and shrimp n’ grits and the not-so-traditional – grits horchata, Brazilian grits, Banana Rama Slama, and Jambalaya grits.

It was a sweltering day, but the spirits ran just as high as the temperature and humidity. Cooks came hungry for victory and attendees just came hungry. Everyone left full of good ol’ southern comfort (not the alcohol), joy and grits.

Thank you to Matt Timms, Daphne & Eric of PicklesandGrits.com, Adrian Ashby and Lindsay Johnstone. The event rocked!
